COP29: A Decisive Step Toward a Sustainable and Digitalized Energy Future
Bludigit at the Forefront of COP29 Alongside Italgas and SOCAR for the Energy Transition
The 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), held in Baku, Azerbaijan, marked a strategic milestone for Bludigit, strengthening its position in the global landscape of sustainable energy innovation.
During COP29, a Cooperation Agreement was signed between Italgas and SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic), aimed at fostering collaboration in the fields of innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. As the digital company of the Italgas Group, Bludigit plays an active role in this partnership, building on its ongoing collaboration with Azerigas, the national gas distribution operator in Azerbaijan.
Among the technologies deployed by Bludigit, CRDS (Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy) from Picarro is proving to be a game-changing tool for the accurate and timely detection of even the smallest gas leaks. Already operational in Baku, this solution is critical to enhancing infrastructure safety and efficiency, while significantly reducing fugitive methane emissions.
Infrastructure as a Catalyst for Sustainability
A highlight of the conference was the event hosted by Italgas on 15 November at the Italian Pavilion – Blue Zone at COP29, titled:
“Methane Emissions in the Global Path to Net Zero: Infrastructure as a Catalyst for Sustainable Gas Trade.”
The session gathered high-level representatives from across the globe — including governments, think tanks, NGOs, and energy companies — to discuss the essential role of infrastructure in mitigating methane emissions, one of the most potent greenhouse gases.
Notable speakers included:
- Pier Lorenzo Dell’Orco, CEO of Italgas Reti, who presented the Group’s transformation into a network tech company and its commitment to decarbonization through digital innovation
- Professor Francesco Corvaro, Special Climate Envoy of the Italian Government, who emphasized Italy’s strategic role in the green transition
- Contributions also came from representatives of Tokyo Gas, Marubeni, Azerigas, the World Bank, the Italian Biogas Consortium, and international organizations such as Clean Air Task Force, Environmental Defense Fund, and the Atlantic Council
A Strategic Partnership for a Net-Zero Future
The agreement with SOCAR — enabled in part by the operational synergy between Bludigit and Azerigas — marks a turning point in accelerating the digital and environmental transformation of gas networks on a global scale.
Best practice sharing, advanced technology adoption, and an agile methodological approach are the levers to building smarter, safer, and more sustainable infrastructures.
As Paolo Gallo, CEO of Italgas, stated:
“We are excited to begin this partnership with SOCAR, which, like us, sees technological innovation and sustainability as key pillars of growth.”
SOCAR also emphasized the strategic importance of the collaboration:
“By enhancing our leak detection capabilities and increasing digitalization, we not only optimize efficiency, but also make a meaningful contribution to emission reductions across the entire network.”
As the digital enabler of the Italgas Group, Bludigit reaffirms its mission: to drive practical solutions that tackle the climate crisis by putting innovation at the service of the global energy transition.
Bludigit and Azerigas: A Strategic Partnership for the Digitalization and Sustainability of Azerbaijan’s Gas Network
Bludigit strengthens its international presence through a high-profile partnership with Azerigas Production Union, the SOCAR Group company responsible for the distribution and supply of natural gas in the Republic of Azerbaijan. The agreement, signed in December 2024, marks a decisive step forward in the digital transformation of the country’s energy infrastructure.
The partnership aims to reduce fugitive emissions and enhance operational efficiency through advanced technologies and a shared digital strategy.
Key Activities Implemented by Bludigit Include:
- Gas Leak Detection with Picarro Technology: Two vehicles equipped with state-of-the-art gas analyzers are now operational in Baku. The system enables monitoring of over 2,400 kilometers of gas network, allowing for highly accurate and timely detection of gas leaks.
- Digital Assessment: Bludigit has conducted an in-depth analysis of the digital maturity of Azerigas’ assets and processes, with the objective of developing a tailor-made digital roadmap. This strategic plan will guide Azerigas towards a more efficient, secure, and sustainable operational model.
“This collaboration confirms Bludigit’s role as an international leader in the digitalization of energy networks,” said Marco Barra Caracciolo, CEO of Bludigit. “Thanks to our cutting-edge technologies and proven expertise, Azerigas is now better equipped to meet the challenges of modernization while further strengthening the safety of its infrastructure.”
Bludigit is proud to actively contribute to Azerigas’ sustainability goals, supporting the development of a gas network that is smarter, safer, and more environmentally responsible.
his initiative further consolidates Bludigit’s international mission to export technological excellence and strategic vision in the global energy tech ecosystem.
Bludigit at the Center of Cadent Gas’ Global Technology Conference: Driving the Digital Transformation of Gas Networks
The Science Museum in London set the stage for the 2nd edition of the Global Technology Conference by Cadent Gas, one of the most prominent international events focused on the digital transformation of energy networks.
Bludigit had the honor of participating with a keynote by Veronica Molina, who presented DANA, our proprietary technological solution developed for the Digital Command and Control Center of Italgas.
